Library Love

I love the library.   I've spent my life in different libraries.  As a child it was the Bethesda Public Library.  That's where my love of children's books began.  Every year I eagerly waited for summer reading to begin.  Back then we would gather in a room and listen to how the program would work that year.  I can so clearly remember my excitement to start my list of books, and to get my free cheeseburgers as prizes.  I was a McDonald's fan back then too.  Some things never change.

The littles and I visit two branches regularly.  The Parkville Branch, which we've gone to since we moved here nearly 7 years ago and where pretty much everybody knows us and has seen both the birth of Sable and Oz.  And, in the last year we've started also going to the Boardwalk branch.  Mainly for their weekly homeschool program.  It's been great and we've met some wonderful librarians there.

This week the Boardwalk branch held a summer reading kick-off and it was so much fun.  When somebody hands you tickets for free popcorn and cotton candy bigger than your head, you know you're in the right place.

Sable ate TWO entire cotton candies.  Is that the plural of cotton candy?  I've never had to type it before.

Don't put down your cotton candy even to color.  Use your left hand if needs be.

As a pre-teen I was my middle school librarian's "teacher's pet".  No joke.  In the morning at my middle school you could either wait outside, wait in the cafeteria, or wait in the library for school to start.  Outside was cold or hot and the cafeteria stunk, so the library was the place to be.  The library could only hold a certain number of students and it filled up fast.  My bus always got there by the time it had filled and the door was locked.  But all I had to do was knock, the librarian would peek out, see me, and let me in.  Why did I get such preference?  Well in middle school I fractured my wrist playing football with my family.  So that got me out of gym and a pass to the library.  I was there everyday for weeks and I spent the time reading and making friends with the head librarian, Mr. Douglas.  He was a very shy and nice person.  I was too.  I think he saw that I was different from a lot of other students. Once I'd healed and was back to gym, he still let me in every morning.  I'd grab the current book I was reading off the shelf and head to my favorite spot to read before school.

In high school my library became the place where I would not only read, but debate with fellow students.  Growing up in Maryland, right outside of DC in a very culturally diverse area led to a lot of political and social discussions.  Not for any class or debate team, but just because we liked to.  Friendships weren't lost because of differing opinions, but strengthened because we understood each other better.  I learned how to make a good argument in that library.  And the idea that just because you're debating, it doesn't mean you're fighting.

When I went off to college, the BYU library became my second home.  In between classes, and sometimes even in place of them, I headed to the library.  Not only was I surrounded by books, my favorite way to exist, but there was also a media center with individual tv sets in private carrels.  For a while I didn't have any tv at my apartment and I would watch old reruns of "Doogie Howser MD".  But many times I would just sit.  Sit and read, sit and study, sit and think - or not - of anything at all.  Which in my opinion is actually a good thing to do sometimes.  The not thinking part I mean.

Those who know me well know that I have a real dislike of e-readers.  Really, I can't stand them.  I fear them.  I fear they will replace hard copy books, and I fear what they will do to my libraries. That they will disappear and somehow I'll disappear too if they do.  Like my identity is wrapped up and in these special places.

For now, I'll continue to take my littles to the library as often as we can get there.  They'll grow up with it for as long as possible, hopefully for the rest of their lives.  And maybe one day I'll be a librarian myself.  Dream come true.  Again, no joke.

Imagine Dragons

I've got a LOT to post, California, Disneyland, Valentines Day. But here's something to listen to first. The band is Imagine Dragons, the lead singer is my cousin Dan Reynolds. I still remember Dan as a gooney little kid who sat with my Dad Dan and my brother Dan talking about being the "3 Dan's". Now he's a bona-fide rockstar. Time, it's just one of those things that never ceases to march on. If you luv their stuff, like most who hear them do, you can buy their new album here.

Free Is Good

Shutterfly is giving away 50 free Christmas cards to bloggers who, well, blog about about the promotion. I'm not one to shy away from freeness so here we go.

I took a look at the Christmas Cards they are offering and I have to say it's gonna be a tough choice. There are HUNDREDS to choose from, and I tend to be indecisive.

I'm luving:

I'm also luving:

Your Christmas letter is printed right on the card, handy dandy I think. Except that means I've got to get it together enough to actually write a letter, but I think it's pretty cool nonetheless.

As part of the promotion we're supposed to check out Shutterfly's other products, those too are MANY. A couple years ago my Mom made and sent us all a Shutterfly calendar, it turned out great. Every month we got to gaze upon family pictures instead of some random absurdly lovely place, dangling kittens, or Justin Bieber.

No, we've never owned a Justin Bieber calendar - but we did see one at Walmart the other day and I'll just say - it was rough.

Next July, when my baby turns one - YIKES, that's gonna kill me - I just might have to pop over to Shutterfly's site and have some invitations printed up. They'd surely beat the E-vites I've shamefully sent out several times.

They've got lots of other neat-o stuff too. Pretty much if you can put a picture on it, they've got it. So check em out, any company that offers such a great freebie for a simple blog post - well they're aces in my book.

7 Days

Then baby will be here. My c-section is scheduled for July 9th.

The last couple weeks have been a bit busy. Think re-organize the ENTIRE house & garage (no rooms or closets have been untouched), buy and build a loft bed for Rome (not me, Jeff), replace all 3 toilets (Jeff again), watch in horror as our contributions to the RS Freesale (which I was in charge of, did TOO much lifting for, and found myself soaked to the bone during a downpour afterwards) covered ALL the tables, take care of existing 3 kids, and try to update blog (an attempt to fulfill a Father's Day promise to my Dad).

Hopefully a plethora of posts are coming soon.

And some really cute baby pics.

Yup

Take a gander at the right hand column for more details.

I guess there aren't actually THAT many details.

So here are some more:

1. It took a LOOOOOOONG time to get pregnant.

2. So long that we had a hard time really believing it was true, and that nothing bad was going to happen.

3. Jeff and I spent late Christmas Eve and most of Christmas Day thinking I was having a miscarraige.

4. I wasn't.

5. The babe is super fine, strong and growing.

6. This pregnancy seems to have altered my ability to produce any amount of heat.

7. Therefore, I am FREEZING cold all the time.

8. This pregnancy has also been far harder than the other 3 in the amount of sickness I feel.

9. Therefore, I'm nauseated all morning, OK in the afternoon, and then feel like I may die at night.

10. Our kids are SUPER secret keepers. They've known for months and did not tell ANYBODY. Really it was quite amazing.

11. We're excited to meet this little one. For a while I've looked frantically around, counting my kids (1,2,3) and feeling like somebody was missing. It's been the weirdest thing.

12. More than likely this is going to be our last. It'll be 4 cesareans and I'm feeling more and more certain that my body is not going to be able to do this again.

13. Getting older sucks.

14. We have a boys name, no we're not telling. But NO, absolutely NO girls names.

15. If you want to make a suggestion there are some requirements: it must be an island, it must NOT start with a letter that starts any of our names (A, J, C, R, S), ideally it will only have 2 syllables.

16. No we are not crazy. There is method to our madness.

17. Our due date is July 15th, but the baby will be born via c-section at least a week early.

18. Christmas and California posts are coming.

19. luvs!

Contagious Luck

Maybe having Cathy (the luckiest woman in the world) as a mother-in-law is finally rubbing off.

Last night I won these pom-poms from a craft blog givaway:

In April I won this at the kid's school Spring Fling:

Both were won with just ONE entry.

Cool thing about the pom-poms is that I'd just written on my new blog plaid star WONDERful the other day how I'd like to make those very same ones for the Sable and Capri's upcoming birthday parties.

If I were a betting woman I might be tempted to take my newfound luck to. . .

But I'm not a betting woman. . .anymore.

Dang it.

Hearts on Fire

If anybody feels like my new blog background is burning their retinas, don't worry it's only temporary.
I'm not usually one for backgrounds, used them before and have always taken them off within days (or seconds) of putting them on.

But it IS Februrary, and

February = gaudy displays o' love

So there you have it.

Back To Our Regularly Scheduled Program

The holidays are over, the decorations are put away (mostly), resolutions have been made (and broken), and life is returning to "normal". It's back to school, back to The Grove, back to McDonald's, Walmart, and the YMCA. But I can't say I'm sad. No matter how great the holidays have been, I'm always glad to see the tree come down and lugged back to the garage. I love putting up my Christmas village, and while I don't LOVE taking it down (it involves a lot of boxes and foam) I'm always glad to see the family pictures return to the mantle. This year the holidays were just enough, not too much to leave me headachy and not to little making me want more.

Jeff and I made our resolutions while eating at On the Border on New Year's Eve with the kids. What are they? I think I'll keep 'em to myself, I mean they are MY resolutions right? But I will say that they have to do with a desire to stop the jigglin' and gets to grinnin'.

Jeff and I went with the kids downtown yesterday to Science City, and then saw a show at the Planetarium. It was called "The Messier Sky" and was great. The universe is so BIG. Seriously, it's totally huge.
We've always had season passes for Science City and Planetarium shows are included along with access to the KC Rail Museum, and I'd highly recommend getting them. Science City is a lot of fun (don't go on saturday if you can avoid it cause it gets really crowded) and the Planetarium is top notch. If you've got a kid that likes trains, the KC Rail Museum will be like their Mecca. You can even get on a sleeper train and walk through it.
We headed home to the lovely tune of, "I'm HUUUNGRY", "I don't want to go home!", "I'm HUUUUNNNNGGGGRRRY!!!" Ahhh, melodious.

The House Began to Twitch. . .

For all those who read/saw the news and are wondering if we survived the recent bout of Tornados here in the Kansas City area I'm here to tell you, we didn't even know about it till this afternoon.
Seriously.
Apparently something like 200 homes and businesses were destroyed and we were none the wiser. We were driving home from a couple days jaunt to Silver Dollar City last night when it all happened. The sky kept lighting up really bright from lightning way off in the distance, and we got a little rain while driving, but that was our entire experience of the storms. Our house? Totally untouched.
So mom, relax, we are not currently circling up, up, up, on our way to Oz.

Stardust

Friday night Jeff and I actually managed to both rent a movie AND watch it. This rarely happens. Usually we either can't get up the gumption to rent a movie, can't find one we want to see, or we rent one and then are too tired to put it in the DVD player and watch it. But friday we beat the odds and suceeded in watching an entire movie (without pausing it 127 times for various kid related reasons). The real upside was that we also actually LIKED this movie, which also rarely happens.
Stardust is one of those movies that I vaguely remember hearing of but had absolutely no idea what it was about. I think my dad may have said that "every movie should be like Stardust". Sorry if I'm quoting you wrong Dad, but I have this wierd memory of you saying that.
If you haven't seen Stardust, you should. It is extremely well made and is a lot of fun to watch. Michelle Pfeiffer is GORGEOUS and as the evil witch of the movie you find yourself rooting for her because she is so darn pretty. Also, Robert DeNiro is very funny - and I rarely, if ever, like Robert DeNiro.
So go to your local Redbox, put it on the top of your Netflix list, or actually visit a Blockbuster and rent it. Support a movie that I don't think a lot of people saw, and that the "genius" Oscar people didn't recognize.
And no. I'm not going to tell you what it's about. You'll just have to see it, like I did, to find out.
I'm not sure I could explain it anyway.

Snow White Gets the Axe

Well Snow White is out. For some reason I wasn't thinking about how Capri had already been Snow White - the first costume mom made. I guess because we didn't dress up as any other characters in the movie it didn't process in my mind. Or, and this is highly possible, I could just be losing my mind altogether.
